The [Parkview] Plan (Part 2)

Tomorrow Night…

....Parkview will unveil their plan for expansion of their Northside campus.

The meeting will be held in the Rosemount Conference Room of the Parkview Financial (Old Scottish Rite) Building, 1518 North Elizabeth. The presentation begins at 5 pm.

I know a lot of people are interested in this. First off we need information of what the hospital plans. Then we need to see what control measures there are in place to insure everything is done in a honest and open manner, i.e., no skirting of the rules and ordinances that every other business and entity has to abide by.

I’m sure we’ll have opportunity to discuss these plans. The question is how much time and under what circumstances.

So…the first step is to see what the hospital has in mind.

See you tomorrow night….

Planting Trees in Mineral Palace Park

Doing things for the ‘hood.

Aquila has donated 10 trees to be planted in Mineral Palace Park.  We need at least 2 volunteers per tree to help with the planting of these trees.  The City will dig the holes so we will just need to place the trees and fill the holes.

We will planting these trees on Saturday, May 19th and will meet at 10:00 near the swimming pool. Jean Latka with Trees Please will give us instructions.  Please bring a shovel and rake.  We hope to get more than 20 people to show our support for this project and Mineral Palace Park.

Please pass this information along to anyone you know who didn’t get this e-mail.  They don’t need to live in the OHNO area.  Also, please give me a call if you’ll be able to help out so I know that we’ll have enough volunteers.

Diversity in Leadership: Comments on a public forum

The PCC Forum on Diversity in Leadership was a succesful event, despite an attempted hijacking.

Last night I attended a “Leadership Forum” event at Pueblo Community College. The specific event was titled “Diversity in Leadership” and the blurb in the Chieftain specifically stated that “Pueblo’s political diversity will be the topic of discussion…” The blurb listed three panel members.

Before the event I called and asked the young lady who returned my call (I think it was Tamara, President of the Student Senate) exactly how they were defining political diversity and were the three panelists a Democrat, a Republican and an Independent or maybe a Libertarian? She didn’t really know. She said “diversity” was kind of up to the panelists to define and they’d tried to pick a variety of people.

It turns out that using the word “political” was probably misleading, since, with one exception, Pueblo’s politics weren’t really discussed. Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad I went and several of the speakers had some very valuable and thought-provoking things to say.

Louella Cruz, however, attempted to hijack the forum into a political rally for herself. She is petitioning to run as the Democratic nominee for Pueblo County Clerk, since she wasn’t accepted as the candidate at the Democratic County Assembly last weekend. She openly asked people to sign her petition, and openly described her goals if elected as County Clerk. This is electioneering and is unacceptable in such a setting unless the other candidates have been given the opportunity to be present and participate on an equal footing.

Never a Dull Moment

Too much excitment.

So. There I was, quietly minding my own business when there was a loud crump followed by a crashing sound outside. There was no need to look. There was only the need to dial 911 and report an injury accident at 18th and Greenwood.

Then…while waiting almost 90 seconds for the Pueblo Police Departments emergency dispatch to ANSWER THE PHONE, give that information to the nice woman on the other end. And, now, hearing cries of children and seeing the Cheve Blazor flipped upside down hanging over my lawn, tell her it’s a rollover.

Out the door to render assistance. People were crawling out of the back end of the car. None seemed to be very badly injured. The youngsters seemed to be more shaken up than anything else. There were three childrens’ car-seats in the vehicle. The driver, a young woman, and her still younger friend seemed to have some bad cuts as they are bleeding but seem cogent and mobile. Get everyone AWAY from the vehicle as there is the strong odor of gas and I’ve seen cars catch fire from electrical shorts after these sorts of things.

Time passes. The police and ambulances and fire trucks all show up and get about doing their respective things.

The occupants of the Blazer are at the hospital getting checked out. The driver of the other vehicle has gone home to contact his insurance company. The mess is cleaned up. The big honking evergreen shrub on the corner has a chunk bitten out of it. The lawn where the car slid over it is going to need to be reseeded. The sprinkler head in the corner there seems undamaged; protected by it’s name-tag defilade position next to the curb.

And I’m wondering…..

The 2006 6th Precinct Republican Caucus

Getting the act together.

The interesting thing about this is that the 6th Precinct seems to be ALL inside of OHNO’s area of operation; 14th to 25th and Santa Fe to Elizabeth. Maybe we should talk to the County Clerk to expand it to include ALL of OHNO. It would simplify things from our perspective. However, I don’t think the election commission would say such from THEIR perspective.

At any rate, the Republican’s 6th precinct caucus for this election cycle will be held at the Pelto’s, 425 W. 18th St. The gathering starts at 7 pm, Tuesday, 21 March 2006. If you are registered to vote in the 6th precinct, you are cordially invited to attend. Refreshments will be offered. If you want to contribute to the refreshments with your own offering, please contact me at 543-4502 or, better yet, e-mail me by clicking on my name (below).

I understand that the 9th precinct is having a similiar gathering not to far from the 6th.

If our Democratic counterparts would care to have any such gathering they may be hosting mentioned here, please contact me. I’ll put it in here.

And do remember….

A clash of doctrines is not a disaster….it’s an opportunity.

The point being that I learn more from a discussion with someone who disagrees with me than I do from talking to someone who thinks exactly like I do.

I like learning…..

When It Rains, It Pours

And they say that Thursdays are a slow-news day?

Today’s Pueblo Chieftain has all KINDS of news. Mostly in the category, I’d describe as ‘environmental issues’; earthquake, (sewage) flood, etc.. But something of interest in terms of politics as well.

Admittedly, I should have written something on the DA’s threat to sue our friends in C’Springs over the recent series of sewage spills yesterday, but I was out of town and the cell-phone/laptop couldn’t find a strong connection up at Pueblo Mountain Park. Someone ought to set up a tower to support Beulah. I know they could camouflage it to look like a tall pine tree. They did that with two towers at the high-point of Monument Hill. Look to the west side as you are approaching it from the north. They’re almost impossible to see coming from the south. At least if you want to keep you car on the road.

At any rate…

This Stuff Stinks

I was beginning to wonder what had become of our vaunted new DA of late. All the sewage rolling down the Fountain and nar a peep from him. Glad to see he’s actually working. Let’s see what transpires.

Also glad to see Sierra Club is getting involved. I’d heard they were in the area. But never saw much of what they were doing. I suspect that the threat of their law suit may have got our DA to do something of his own. And he managed to get his into the paper first….how nice.

As for what our friends in C’Springs think of all these people waving writs in their face, we’ll have to see. Sure, they’re disappointed. It means they’ll have to ‘clean-up their act’ [tongue firmly in cheek]. And that will cost money. Money they were probably hoping they wouldn’t have to spend.

Personally, I think the lawsuits should go forward. It will be nice to see our DA in action on his first, as far as I can tell, major effort in his new job.

My current question, which will never be fully answered, is would his predecessor have acted sooner?

Speaking of Politics

We’ve got a race!!!!!

It’s Steve Narwocki vs. Judy Weaver; for Pueblo City Council First District.

I know a bit about Steve. I know NOTHING about Judy, except for what is written in the Chieftain.

The next Quarterly General Meeting of OHNO will be Tuesday, 6 September, 2005. Place and agenda to be determined. However, we are seriously looking at having Steve and Judy, and anybody else who has thrown their hat in the ring for first district, speak to us.

We’ll keep you apprised as to what happens about that idea.

Special Event at the MLK Cultural Center

The Martin Luther King Cultural Center will host a Buffalo Soldiers Encampment later this week.

The Martin Luther King Cultural Center, conveniently located in OHNO territory at 2713 North Grand, will host a Buffalo Soldiers Encampment on its grounds later this week. These kinds of events are always fun. Looks like the weather might not be too nice, so when it clears off and you’ve got a few minutes, stop by so those folks from Texas feel like their efforts are appreciated.
