A Lost Stalwart of Pueblo
On the passing of Ersilia Cruz
A week ago, today, Pueblo lost one of it’s finest citizens. Ersilia Cruz passed away from a stroke.
Our condolences to her family and most especially to the community for which she was such a pillar of strength and energy. Pueblo and especially Hyde Park will miss her.
The challenge, now, is for some one from that community, that neighborhood, to come forward to fill the big shoes that this little lady wore.

Hello Pueblo!!!
A short introduction is in order. My name is Alex Aragon, Director of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association and the Hyde Park Center. I would like to give an update to this posting that will show the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association is up and running. After our good friend Ersilia went home to the Lord, the future of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association was in question. Interest to carry on the work Mrs. Cruz started was shown by other organizations in the city of Pueblo. The Cruz family held several public meetings with the goal of finding someone from the community to take a leadership role.
The result of these meetings produced a new Board of Directors and new ideas. The new Board and the new Director have been working very hard to design and implement new “in-house” programs based on community needs and input.
The first new program was the Kidz Zone after school program.
This program was designed to provide a fun and educational place to be durring the peak hours of danger to youth. The target age group is k-8, with plans to expand to cover the high school grades next year.We serve our Kidz Zone participants an after school meal free of charge through a strategic partnership with Care and Share of Colorado. The Meal is normally a sandwich or soup with a juice, chips and cookies.
The difficult decision to offer this program free of charge was made to inspire stewardship in the form of time, talant and treasure in our community. We have been somewhat successful in all three aspects to date.
In addition to the meals served in the evening, we work very hard to gather food staples for our residents to take advantage of on a weekly basis. This usually consists of potatos and bread. We also take advantage of the free days that Care and Share offers to provide food baskets to those in need.
The computer lab is up and running again and classes will start soon. We expect to have classes from begginer to advanced, with additional classes on microsoft powerpoint.
The twice a week excerisize class and the once a month health clinic top off our regularly scheduled programs at the Hyde Park Center.
Our efforts to serve our community have only begun. With the help and support of our friends in the PNP and other organizations, we expect to have a positive impact not only in the Hyde Park area but the city of Pueblo as well.
We are not so bold as to say we can do it all, as a matter of fact we will say that we are asking for direction and advice from our friends throughout the City and County of Pueblo. We are not above admitting that we are starting over and are somewhat inexperienced in some respects.
Yours in Solidarity

Currently president of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, a primarily Hispanic community on the west side of Pueblo, Colorado, Ersilia Cruz is not a newcomer as a resident leader. Known informally as the “Mayor” of Hyde Park, Cruz has fought hard for the preservation of the neighborhood in which she has lived for 50 years. Her first venture into community improvement causes came through the War on Poverty when she led the struggle to capture some of the benefits of this federal program for her Hyde Park neighborhood. Her efforts resulted in many water, sewer and pavement improvements for the community, as well as the establishment of several youth programs, testking 1z0-052 including baseball and basketball camps. This was just the beginning of Cruz’s activism on behalf of her neighborhood. Since then, she has been in the forefront of numerous battles to preserve and improve living conditions in this often neglected corner of Pueblo. For many years, she led the fight to keep the neighborhood school open. When that struggle ultimately was lost, she played a prominent role in the conversion of the building into a library. She always has been one of the first to knock on city hall’s door when infrastructure improvements are needed in Hyde Park or decaying buildings harboring drug addicted squatters must be demolished. Concern for young people in Hyde Park has been a motivating factor for Cruz’s actions. In 1999, she helped establish a computer education program at the community center, and was instrumental, along with the Hyde Park School Usage Committee, in using a federal program to obtain computers for the center. testking 312-50 She followed up this achievement by gaining financial support from various city agencies for a much-needed renovation of the center, now the source of several youth recreation programs.
