Making It Cheaper & Better — Sour Cream (Cultured)

Another example of how to save money and provide superior product for yourself in a time of economic distress.

If you think making your own healthy yogurt was simple….

....just wait!

Sour cream is so much easier.

You pay about $4.50 for five pounds of sour cream at Sam’s Club. And, if you’re not into restaurant or catering activities, it can likely go moldy on you before you use it all up. And if you’re not a member of Sam’s Club, it’ll likely be half again as expensive in regular grocery outlets.

What to do??????

There’s an oh-so-simple solution…..

Make it yourself!

It’s so simple I’m astonished we’ve been buying it from retail outlets.

Here’s how to make it:

[2] Put in two tablespoons of buttermilk.
[3] Let stand at room temp for 24 hours.
[4] Refrigerate for five days for the flavor to develop.

Again, I counsel making sure the containers you put it into are properly cleaned to help prevent bad bacteria and fungi from getting into the material. Furthermore, culture the sour cream in pint sized containers to prevent contamination of the whole product as you begin to use it. If you don’t open the cultured pint-sized containers, they’ll likely keep for a very long time. So using one pint at a time is economical.
