OHNO Bi-Monthly Meeting Report — June 5, 2007
What happened at the last meeting.
OHNO Meeting Minutes
June 5, 2007
Temple Emmanuel
Call to order at 7:00 PM by Susan Pelto
The meeting began with a special announcement by Michael ___?____, our host at Temple Emmanuel, inviting us to celebrate the Torah dedication on Sunday June 10 at 2 PM. The new Torah was commissioned by a scribe in Israel, but the last 100 letters of the scroll will be filled in by the congregation in a special ceremony from Friday night through Sunday. This will be one of three scrolls at the Temple; the oldest is 135 years old and dates to Sept. 7, 1900. This is the first Torah dedication in Pueblo’s history.
Treasurers Report: $499.90 in the account.
Secretary’s Report: No changes in minutes from last meeting. Minutes are on the Pueblog. No action items to address from last meeting.
President’s Report:
The Board of Directors has established their regular meeting time as the third Wednesday of the month at 7 PM at the Pelto residence, 425 W. 18th Street. All OHNO members are welcome to attend.
Announcements:
There will be an Art in the Park festival on Sunday, June 24 from 12-4 in Mineral Palace Park across from the Art Guild. Diane Eason and Susan Morris of the Near Northside Cottage Neighborhood Association organized this event.
OHNO members are advised to attend the Public Transit Meetings scheduled for the next few weeks. The city is developing a master plan for public transportation and it could greatly affect all of us, especially the disabled.
Committee Reports:
Mineral Palace Park: Carolyn advised that the tree planting in Mineral Palace Park was a great success.
Special Projects: The Spring Clean Up had a good response.
Social: Please sign up to provide refreshments at our next meeting in August. Block party planning is in progress with tentative dates in August or September.
Communications: Chuck reported a significant increase in newsletter distribution this month, and a subsequent increase in costs. We need to decide what type of newsletter to produce as well as the option of using email for distribution to those that are willing to do so. Please visit the blog and log in comments and suggestions for the newsletter.
Membership: Angela reports 7 memberships so far. Several more signed up tonight.
Other Announcements:
Pueblo Cares – a program about renewing environments. They are soliciting help from neighborhoods to identify browned fields (industrial areas no longer in use and possibly contaminated). We need an OHNO representative for their meetings. Ten sites have been identified on the Northside, mostly north of 29th. There is a list of meetings on their flyer if anyone is interested. Their next meeting is 6 PM on June 6 at the main library.
Introductions were made around the room. A sign-in sheet was passed around as well.
Heather Norton introduced our guest speaker, David Cockrell, who will present information about the Historic Districts that were identified in the Northside Neighborhood Survey. David is Senior Land Use Planner for the city of Pueblo and now has Wade Broadhead working with him in the Planning Department.
Action Item: OHNO must decide if it supports the Historic District nominations. There are two options; wait and incorporate the results from the next phase of the neighborhood survey into a Historic District nomination, or designate the recommended areas now and add on in the future as necessary. The Board of Directors recommends we go ahead and make the nominations.
The process is as follows:
Notice is made to the neighborhood.
The Historic Preservation Commission holds a hearing where both sides have their say.
Planning and Zoning reviews the nomination for compatibility with the surrounding area.
City Council hears testimony and then votes for or against the Historic District designation.
Action Item: A vote was held and OHNO voted to sponsor the two Historic Districts on the northside as recommended by the Neighborhood Survey results. At least 4 households in the district will be on the Historic District Committee along with at least 2 others. Temple Emmanuel has volunteered to be on the committee along with Susan, Yolanda, and Yvonne at present. Any interested persons should see Susan after the meeting.
Final Announcement: Parkview Hospital PUD meetings are coming up so be sure to watch for the notices in the newspaper. Make sure Chuck has your correct email so he can send you notices electronically. We should all make an effort to attend when possible.
Meeting Adjourned 8:30 PM
Respectfully submitted, Janet Dash, secretary
